I deleted all partitions, created a single new partition and did a full format. After some 'googling' it seems that hard continuous use, particularly with torrents, can push a drive too hard and cause sectors to be falsely mark as 'pending' when they are actually ok (and judging by some of the content on the drive, it had been used with torrents). I inherited a used 1TB usb HDD which had a Pending Sector Count in the low 'hundreds'. Chkdsk /f won't touch the Pending Sector Count. A low level format is the easiest way to do this. The way to force the drive to do this is to zero all the sectors. The drive will test them when they are no longer in use and determine if they are truly bad, or mistakenly identified.
